Why boosting 80 Hz made the bass boomier — not bigger
The search is usually 'how to EQ bass so it cuts through.' The mistake is almost always boosting the fundamental when the mix needed the harmonics.
The move is famous because it fails so consistently. The bass feels small. You reach for an EQ. You boost somewhere between 60 and 100 Hz because that is “where bass lives.” The meter gets happier. The note gets fatter in solo. In the mix it turns into a pillow. Kick and bass start occupying the same sofa. You cut 80 Hz on the kick to compensate, and now neither of them has a center.
What happened is not mysterious. You amplified the fundamental — the slowest, widest, least directional part of the sound — and left the overtones that actually carry pitch and attack alone. “Bigger” in a small speaker is almost never more 80 Hz. It is more of the harmonic series that implies 80 Hz on systems that cannot reproduce 80 Hz.
A more honest bass EQ
Find the note. If the riff sits around E, the fundamental is near 41 Hz (E1) or 82 Hz (E2). Plant a root there. Do not boost it yet. Grow the octave grid. Listen to 2× (the first octave) and 4× (two octaves up). Those are usually where “the bass is in the track” lives on a phone speaker. A small lift on the octave, with the fundamental left alone or even dipped, is a common, boring, effective mix.
If the bass is buzzing or growling rather than round, the offending energy is often a higher prime — 3× or 5× the root — not a random 200 Hz bell. That is why a harmonic grid is faster than hunting. You are not asking “is boxiness at 240 or 280?” You are asking “is this the third of this note?”
Shape instead of chasing six knobs
Once the lattice is pointing at the right family, RootEQ’s Shape control scales every band’s gain together. 100% is what you dialed. 0% is the lattice with no boost or cut. Negative Shape inverts the whole design. That is useful on a bass because the right answer is often “this family, but less of it” after the drop, without redrawing the curve.
None of this replaces arrangement. If the bass and the kick share a fundamental, EQ cannot invent a second instrument. It can stop you from making the shared fundamental louder. That is already a better day.
