What is a harmonic-grid EQ — and why a parametric EQ fights you
A parametric EQ treats every frequency as an isolated decision. A harmonic-grid EQ treats a note as a family of related overtones. That difference is the whole product.
Most people searching for an “EQ plugin” already own one. Ableton EQ Eight, Logic Channel EQ, Pro-Q, Nova — a parametric equalizer with bells you place by hand. That tool is correct for a huge amount of mixing. It is also the wrong mental model for a specific, extremely common job: shaping a note, not a random Hertz value.
A note is not one frequency. A bass playing A1 is a fundamental near 55 Hz plus a stack of overtones at 110, 165, 220, 275 Hz and onward. When you grab a bell at 55 Hz and push it, you made the fundamental louder. You did not make the instrument more present. You often made it boomier. The presence you wanted was sitting in the harmonics.
What “harmonic-grid” actually means
RootEQ starts from a root frequency — the pitch you care about — and grows a lattice of related bands from it. Those related frequencies are not a guess and not a “smart EQ.” They are a prime-ratio grid. With the default prime of 2, the grid is octaves: 2×, 4×, 8× the root. Switch the prime to 3 and the lattice jumps to 3×, 9×, 27×. Prime 5 gives 5×, 25×. The plugin will do this for up to ten grid bands on each root, and you can plant up to eight roots.
Underneath, every node is a standard peaking (bell) biquad filter. Gain, Q, and frequency still mean what they mean on any parametric EQ. The grid is a way of choosing those frequencies so they stay musically related while you drag.
Why a normal parametric EQ fights this job
You can do the same thing in a regular EQ. Place a bell on the fundamental, another on the second harmonic, another on the fourth. Then the singer goes sharp. Or the bass is a fretless line, not a static 55 Hz. Or you decide the problem was never the octave — it was the third harmonic buzzing against a guitar. Now you are re-placing four bands that no longer agree with each other.
A harmonic-grid EQ keeps the family locked. Move the root, and the lattice moves with it. That is the entire interaction: plant a root, grow its overtones, then — if one overtone deserves its own family — promote it into a new root. RootEQ calls that last move branching.
What this is not
It is not a linear-phase mastering EQ. It is not a dynamic EQ. It is not match-EQ, mid/side, or an “AI mix assistant.” It will not look at your track and decide what is muddy. If you need a surgical notch on a non-harmonic whistle, a normal parametric EQ is faster. RootEQ is for the other case: the problem is a family, and you can hear which note it belongs to.
If that is the job you keep hiring an EQ to do, a harmonic lattice is not a gimmick. It is the missing selection tool.
