How to add presence without turning the vocal into a whistle
The Google query is 'vocal presence EQ 3k 5k.' The useful version is: which partial of this voice is doing the work, and which one is the blade.
“Presence” is not a frequency. It is the sensation that a voice is in the room with the consonants intact. Cheat sheets point at 2–5 kHz because that is where a lot of diction lives for a lot of people. A shelf across that range also catches every sharp s, every cracked take, and every already-bright condenser. Then you add a de-esser to undo the EQ you just did.
Find the spoken note, not the zone
A vocal is a moving fundamental, usually between ~100 and 300 Hz for many chests, higher for others. Presence related to that note often rides as a specific harmonic, not as a constant 3.2 kHz island. If the singer is on A3 (~220 Hz), the family around 3–4 kHz is not “3k.” It is a high multiple of 220. When the melody jumps, that partial jumps. A static bell stays behind and starts shaving unrelated words.
RootEQ will not track pitch automatically. Say that plainly: there is no pitch detector. You plant a root on the problem center of the phrase — the note they sit on, or the note that whistles — and you grow the grid until a band lands on the blade. Cut that band. If the whole chorus lives on two notes, two roots are honest. If the line is a run, a conventional dynamic EQ or a de-esser is the better object for sibilance, because sibilance is often noise-like, not harmonic.
A sequence that does not lie
- Solo the vocal. Speak-sing the line. Decide whether the pain is an S (broadband, noisy) or a ringing vowel (pitched).
- If it is an S, skip RootEQ. Use a de-esser.
- If it is a vowel whistle, plant a root on the sung pitch. Grow primes until a grid handle sits on the whistle. Narrow the Q. Cut a few dB. Check in the mix, not in solo.
- If the vocal also needs more “here,” lift a lower harmonic in the same family instead of a wide 4 kHz shelf.
That is slower than a preset called Vocal Presence. It also does not pretend a single curve is correct for every throat.
