When a standard parametric EQ is the better tool than RootEQ
RootEQ is not a Pro-Q replacement. Here is the honest split, so you do not buy the wrong object — or blame the right one.
People landing on an EQ product page are often comparison shopping: Pro-Q, TDR Nova, stock EQ, “best EQ plugin 2026.” RootEQ loses that comparison if the criterion is “one equalizer for every task.” It should lose. A general parametric EQ is the desk wrench. RootEQ is a specialized wrench for related frequencies.
Reach for a parametric EQ when
- You need a high-pass, low-pass, or shelf. RootEQ’s bands are peaking filters. There is no dedicated HP/LP/shelf type.
- You need a notch on a non-harmonic irritant: a 50/60 Hz hum, a headphone leak, a fluorescent buzz, a clicky 2.3 kHz that does not belong to the note.
- You need linear phase for a mastering crossover-sensitive move. RootEQ is zero-latency IIR. It has phase rotation like any analog-style bell. That is normal. It is not “phase-linear.”
- You need dynamic bands, sidechain, mid/side, or match-EQ. None of those are in RootEQ.
- You need more than eight independent centers that are not a tree. The cap is eight roots.
Reach for RootEQ when
- The job is “this pitch’s family,” not “this isolated Hertz.”
- You keep placing octave-related bells by hand and they drift.
- You want to scale a whole overtone design up and down (Shape) without redrawing it.
- A resonance is a stack, and promoting one partial into a new root is a clearer picture than eight unrelated dots.
Keeping a conventional EQ on the same channel is not a failure of RootEQ. It is how specialized tools get used. High-pass the rumble with the stock EQ. Plant the note in RootEQ. That chain is reasonable. Claiming one plugin should replace the other is not.
